Cuts?

If the Inqy sources and a buggy Eagles website are to be believed, Dirk Johnson and Jeremy Bloom are about 45 minutes away from being cut.

Both moves surprise me. Sal Rocca has the stronger leg, but Johnson really stepped up his game during the punting competition. Many thought the tie-breaker would be David Akers' preference for a place holder. On that score, Johnson seemed to have the upper hand. Sure, he wasn't Akers' favorite last year, perhaps a large part of the reason Akers' was uncharacteristically less accurate in figgies, but anyone could see that Rocca was worse in his several holds in the preseason. He couldn't get the laces right in the Ravens game where Akers missed, and he also didn't have them oriented correctly on another kick that Akers still managed to make.

Bloom's departure would be very surprising. He was a bit of a disappointment in the pre-season return game, but if he is cut the Eagles don't appear to have a plan B - other than Bucky returning kicks and Greg Lewis (yikes!) returning punts?!?! I mean, how bad could Bloom have been to the point where Reid prefers G. Lew?

More bizarrely, it would also mean that Bill Sampy is somehow, miraculously rewarded for getting hurt at the beginning of training camp and being unable at all to show what he could, or more likely couldn't do.
