Worst Ever?

So where does the Mets’ collapse rank? Our junkball pitching friend “Fish,” a once aspiring minor league thrower and very knowledgeable baseball afficianado, offers his analysis.

“Statistically speaking, it's the worst.

Borrowing from a cbssportsline.com article today:  ‘No major league team had owned a lead of seven games or more with 17 to play and failed to finish in first place. New York, which had that margin on Sept. 12, matched the largest lead blown in September. The 1934 New York Giants (Sept. 6) and 1938 Pittsburgh Pirates (Sept. 1) also led by seven games in the final month only to drop into a fatal tailspin.’

Emotionally, it's crushing.  you're talking about a team that went 1-6 in their final 7 games, all at home against the two worst teams in their own division.

Minaya has yet to stand up for Willie Randolph.  David Wright called out his teammates.  Glavine looked like he was throwing the game yesterday.  Milledge and Reyes doing their little home run dance that precipitated the brawl Saturday.  the Mets are a mess.

Add all that up and put it in the New York media?  worst.  collapse.  ever.”
