Fade to Black?

Bob Brookover gives a more detailed and tangible mid-season “what went wrong” analysis than his colleague Les Bowen, and also gives a glimpse of the looming issues to be confronted in the offseason.

Some interesting tidbits here:

“Since taking the team to Super Bowl XXXIX, Reid's Eagles are 19-21 and have had to endure some thoroughly embarrassing performances, including Sunday's loss to Dallas….

Reid also used to dominate against NFC East teams but is 5-10 in his last 15 games against the Eagles' division rivals...

When the Eagles imploded in 2005, the losses on the field had a lot to do with the losses in personnel...This team, by contrast, has been relatively healthy, with the lone exceptions being free safety Brian Dawkins and cornerback Lito Sheppard. [Only the two best players on defense]”

But the biggest point of contention is Brookover’s assertion that McNabb deserves to play out the season, which is all well and good, but it overlooks the fact that ACL injuries are a two year recovery. It is to McNabb’s credit that he is playing as well as he has – better than Culpeper or Palmer at similar points in their recovery – but it is ridiculous to suggest that all McNabb gets is this year to play. It would be a huge mistake. Next year is the year he should be allowed to play, not this year. The Eagles will be making a huge mistake in “letting him play” this year only to let him leave or benching him next year, that is the year that matters most.
