I told you so

Yesterday I said that the feeling at FedEx on Sunday was that the Eagles were the one with the winning record and it was the Redskins who were struggling to get to .500. Writes Mike Wise in today’s Washington Post, “So how come 5-4 feels like 3-6 or 2-7 around here?”

I wrote earlier about the likelihood that the Eagles will soon be 5-6 after getting thrashed by an elite AFC team on the road – just like last year. Phil Sheridan writes similarly today, “Chances are, the Eagles will win Sunday and lose to the Patriots. That would give them a 5-6 record with five games to play. They were in precisely that situation last year when they reeled off five consecutive wins, stole the division title, and went to the playoffs again. Can they do it again? Theoretically, yes. Realistically, it sure seems unlikely…It should be noted that last year's task appeared at least as daunting as this year's. The Eagles had that December stretch of three consecutive road games against division opponents. They won all three.”

And weeks ago I suggested that the simplest and fairest way to resolve the $3 million overpayment to Brian Westbrook was to just add it to his compensation in the form of a contract extension signing bonus or roster bonus. Today Les Bowen writes, “Now that Brian Westbrook has agreed to pay back that extra $3 million you accidentally paid him in 2006, now that you don't feel like you're in some silly test of wills over an accounting mistake, maybe it's time to revisit Westbrook's contract…Recognizing that Westbrook is much more than he seemed to be in 2005, and deserves a little bump-up for that, won't invite chaos. There is only one Brian Westbrook on this team, the other players know that very well. The front office could win some goodwill at a difficult time.”
