Quinton Gets the Call

Quinton Mikell will replace Sean Considine at SS. Interestingly, Mikell had been spelling Brian Dawkins at FS during his injury. More coincidentally, Mikell dislocated his shoulder in the super bowl and later had shoulder reconstruction. The player he replaces, Sean Considine, is out for the rest of the year also because of a shoulder injury.

Someone smarter than I will have to detail the important talent/skill differences needed between free safety and strong safety. I thought Mikell had done an excellent job in Dawkins’ stead, to the point where I was beginning to think that maybe the Eagles had stumbled upon Dawkins eventual replacement and heir apparent in their versatile backup safety. But now that Mikell is the starter at SS for the rest of the year, I’m already picking up chatter that perhaps Mikell could be a permanent fixture there and be the starter into the future regardless of Considine’s return to health next season.

So which is it? Is Mikell a better FS or SS? The answer will determine which of the other safety positions they will still have to fill in the offseason – and by “fill” in terms of Brian Dawkins I mean to bring and groom to be his eventual successor.

i played w/ Quinton in college. he is the most versatile player I've ever played with. he's a perfect fit for both positions. a unique balance of power tackling, mixed with the finesse of a good cover corner.
